Mac-Talla, is an Islay classic, crafted by Morrison Distillers their connection to Islay has spanned through generations of whiskey brokers, blenders, bottlers and of course distillers.
We are delighted to share with you the exclusive import of this time-honoured Scottish distillery, not only its history, but also a selection of some of the best Scotch whiskeys and liqueurs of which we are lucky to be the keepers.
William Walker, one of the pre-eminent whiskey brokers of his day, began his connection to Islay through his close work with various distilleries on the island, even advocating on behalf of the Islay whiskey trade with US companies for repeal. of the American prohibition in 1933.
William Walker became very fond of Islay, where he eventually bought a house and played an integral role in the development of transport, trade and the marketing of the island’s produce.
His philanthropic nature was deeply appreciated by Islay residents, with the Glasgow Islay Association (of which he was a life member and president) noting in 1934:
“On the island itself, he has been closely identified with all causes worthy of support.”
Stanley P. Morrison joined the firm of T. William Walker & Co as a trainee whiskey broker in the 1930s and eventually married William Walker’s daughter Elizabeth.
The couple had 2 sons: Stanley (known as Tim) and W. Brian. In 1951 he founded Stanley P Morrison Ltd and, as a reliable and intuitive broker, was involved in many major brokerage transactions with major mixing houses in the 1950s and 1960s until his death in 1971.
In 1963, a chance lunchtime meeting in a Glasgow restaurant led to the agreement to purchase Islay’s oldest distillery, Bowmore (established 1779), that evening.
A period of expansion with new stills, mash tun, washbacks and ancillary equipment restored the quality and reputation of Bowmore’s spirit within the mixing trade.
W. Brian Morrison joined the family business in late 1964.
Managing director for many years, he oversaw the company’s growing need to supply its single malt and blends business.
The decades from the 1980s saw a transformation in appreciation and demand for Islay Single Malts soared through the national and international markets.
During this time, Morrison Bowmore emerged as a globally recognized brand of quality single malt Scotch whisky, producing a characterful spirit with some legendary bottlings.
Morrison Bowmore Distillers was acquired by Suntory in 1994.
The latest chapter in the legacy, Morrison Scotch Whiskey Distillers, is owned and run solely by Jamie and Brian Morrison.
In every whiskey released, they are committed to continuing to impart the knowledge that has been passed down from generations of family whiskey makers.
Through Mac-Talla, the family can take you on a journey around the island showcasing the wide variety and depth of flavor that Islay has to offer.
